This is a most excellent show!!! The Panama Red kicks butt. Everything is great but Red is definetly worth a download all its own. Midnight Monnlight is a sweet delight. Greeeeeeeaaaaaaaat show!

Holy Guacamole! This show has everything. The set with peter Rowan is wild. The Panama Red is rather Spicey to say the least. The Barefoot boys unload while the Master Sings his tales.(or as P Rowan says the String Cheese Boys...) How bout an OTR archive?

Subject: Asheville........
When people associate Asheville with amazing SCI, this should be the first show that comes to mind. Sure 10/30/98 has that amazing reversified San Jose - Land's End, and 11/10/00 is typical fall 2000 SCI, but this show has even more.

First, there's Peter Rowan, who works really well with them at this show more than others (I would say more than 4/28/00 even, although I haven't heard any of the other nights from this run they had with P Rowan); Kang calls him Big Poppa and he takes off his shoes after Panama Red. He also comes out of nowhere to join them for a fun Lonesome Road Blues. Flawless solo rotation during Midnight Moonlight makes it rival 11/17/00's Moonlight. The haunting, 10-minute Panama Red features some great backup vocals by Kang's mandolin, while Kang himself briefly turns Hispanic. Best Panama Red.

There are some good now-classic Cheese songs that have important developments here. The Round the Wheel to start things off has the more energized rising jam before the bass solo that became commonplace by 2000. The Rollover... well, it's still early for this song, so I respect the effort.

Most importantly, this show features one of the first "modern" Little Hands. While the 4/13/99 Little Hands and all other previous versions of the song (except very early ones) have that long Celtic-like jam with Kang already on fiddle during the middle of the song, this is the first clear-cut keys - guitar - fiddle solos Little Hands. (I haven't heard the 4/16/99 one, so I am not sure if this one is the 1st or 2nd "modern" LH). The transitions between solos are a little weak because of this, but the fiddle solo is great. I majored in Little Hands at college and although this is not my favorite version (see 10/26/00, also 11/12/01(I think)), the fiddle solo is certainly top 3 if not the best. Orgasmic. This LH also features the somewhat rare "extra chorus" before Kyle comes in.

The Rhythm of the Road that follows the little hands is great too, some humorous repetition stuff in the beginning section (which I think they do fairly often anyway) and then a more-scorching-than-usual jam where Kang refuses to stop.

The Bigger Isn't Better I don't think too much of this time around, but I haven't listened to it all the way through too many times since I am always distracted by the other songs. I will say the nuts organ-like keys part that every version of this song has is too fast for its own good, whatever that means. The segue into Lonesome Road is nice, though.

As for the recording itself, you can hear a fair amount of crowd noise but they're pumped and I think in certain songs the crowd only makes it seem more energetic.

Get this show.
